Concrete Repair and Protection
Structural Renovations Limited recently completed phase one of specialist concrete repair and protection works at Hampshire Court Car Park in Brighton, working with BCS Robertson.
The works formed part of the refurbishment of the existing car park structure and were undertaken in accordance with a project specification prepared by Sika for BLB Surveyors.
Repairing the Concrete Structure
Areas of deterioration affected the reinforced concrete beams and soffits, with cracking and spalling exposing corroded steel reinforcement.
Our works began with a hammer-test survey to identify loose and defective concrete. The affected areas were then carefully broken out to a sound substrate, exposing the reinforcement to allow thorough preparation and treatment.
Working overhead from access platforms, our operatives removed defective material while retaining the surrounding sound concrete and the distinctive profile of the existing structure.
Treating the Reinforcement and Reinstating Repairs
Following preparation, the exposed reinforcement received Sika MonoTop 1010 corrosion protection treatment before the concrete was reinstated using a Sika MonoTop repair mortar.
The repairs were built up and finished to follow the original concrete profiles, including the narrow beam sections and shaped soffits. Careful application was required to achieve fully compacted repairs around the reinforcement and restore the affected surfaces.
Protecting Against Further Deterioration
Alongside the localised repairs, the specified protection system included Sika FerroGard 903+ corrosion inhibitor to the surrounding concrete.
Surface imperfections were filled using Sika MonoTop 3020 before the application of Sikagard 552 W Aquaprimer and Sikagard 675 W GB ElastoColor protective coatings.
This approach combined repairs to visibly damaged areas with treatment and protection of the surrounding concrete, helping to limit further deterioration and extend the serviceable life of the structure.
Specialist Concrete Repairs
The project demonstrates the importance of addressing both damaged concrete and the corrosion affecting the reinforcement beneath it. Thorough preparation, compatible repair materials and protective treatments all contribute to the durability of the completed works.
